BUILDING CHINA BRIDGES · CONSULTING FUTURES
China’s next great export will be advice
What happens when industrial depth, AI and global ambition reshape consulting?
China’s outward expansion will require more than products and capital. It needs people who can interpret unfamiliar markets, organize local ecosystems and turn technical capability into credible decisions. An advisory industry may grow alongside that need.
Follow Chinese companies abroad
Market selection, localisation, distribution, government relations and after-sales design are immediate advisory needs for companies extending beyond China. Firms that understand the Chinese parent and build genuine local knowledge could earn their first international references here.
A second opening is direct technical counsel to foreign clients in fields where Chinese engineering and industrial practice are already competitive. Neither path requires an overnight claim to universal boardroom authority.

AI changes the economics of the pyramid
Research, translation, modelling and synthesis can move much faster with AI, while problem definition, judgment, trust and coalition-building remain scarce. The paper’s ‘three-month to three-day’ phrase is a provocation about selected analytical tasks, not a measured promise for an entire engagement.
A China-centred platform could combine technical talent, computational capacity, industrial access and endurance. Its credible advantage would be better insight linked to real capability, rather than a lower hourly rate.
Senior counsel
Frame the choice and earn trust
Analytical engine
Research, test and model at greater speed
Build network
Connect suppliers, investors and operators to execution
Operating model concept; actual speed and cost require project-level validation
International authority has to be earned
Local clients will expect independence, confidentiality, cultural fluency and the ability to challenge a Chinese supplier as readily as any other. A consulting platform tied too closely to product sales risks losing the credibility of its advice.
Incumbent firms should deepen exceptional senior counsel and rebuild the machinery around it. Clients can separate the most trusted judgment from analytical production and buy each where it is strongest.

Back to the Drawing Board
The next competitive leap is to make meaning as well as things: to translate technical superiority into choices that others trust and can implement.
